Continuing our series highlighting the incredible, diverse talents of the 26 artists currently occupying the Studios at The Complex; today we're platforming Maria Maarbjerg, a Dublin-based artist originally from Denmark whose practice primarily focuses on photography and text.
Maria studied at Fatamorgana – The Danish School of Photography, where she developed a
style leaning toward documentary photography, with a strong emphasis on composition and
conveying emotions through photography. She holds a Fine Art degree from TU Dublin and
has received several awards and residencies, including A4 Sounds Studio’s We Only Want
the Earth Studio Residency, an RDS Visual Art Award, and Fire Station Residential Studio
Award.
Her work appears in both print and projected forms. At the core of her
practice lies a deep fascination with journalism and the intricate art of crafting narratives,
no matter how abstract they seem. Collectivism is a fundamental part of her work,
emphasising connections and shared experiences.
Maria has exhibited her work in Denmark and Ireland, including a 2022 solo exhibition
titled Ode to Changes at the RHA in Dublin, which will be shown again in November 2024 as
part of IMMA’s Living Canvas. Her next solo show will be at The Complex in the summer of 2025.
