The Complex is the only multi-disciplinary arts centre in Dublin's north inner city. It is committed to providing access to the arts to all people and space to artists for all art forms. Combining seventeen studios, a large warehouse performance space and a gallery, it brings a diverse range of arts practitioners and audiences together in one dynamic place. The Complex is interested in work that is of meaningful social value, and its mission is to enrich local communities and promote well-being with inspiring arts programmes.

The Complex is located in the old fruit markets area of Dublin city centre, a series of connected warehouses, the complex comprises the depot performance space, the gallery and 18 artists' studios filled with visual artists, designers, musicians and theatre-makers. It is also home to the Kirkos ensemble and the Improvised Music Company

The Complex was formed in 2008 as a CLG (Company Limited by Guarantee) and became a registered charity in 2010. It currently has a Board of nine directors that oversees governance, strategic development, and financial management.

The organisation was founded to provide space and services to artists, is run by artists, and is dedicated to supporting all kinds of arts. It employs a small team of nine and a large number of contract staff for its core operations. In addition, it engages designers, curators, art technicians, lighting and sound engineers, stage management, production staff, and set and costume makers for its activities.

The Complex has been regularly funded by the Arts Council since 2018 and by the City Council since 2010. It is now considered an integral part of the city's cultural infrastructure by both the Arts Council and the Department of Arts and Culture.

The Complex has been resourceful in its quest for a permanent home. It began by converting a vacant space on Smithfield Square into a live performance venue and later transformed a series of temporary spaces into hubs for artistic practice within Dublin 7. It is now based in the Markets area on Arran Street East, where it has established a strong and recognisable identity within the surrounding local community.

Since its beginning, The Complex has been artist led and committed to transforming vacant spaces into centres of professional arts practice, breathing creativity into the community. From 2009, it has enjoyed a nomadic existence, creating bases in several sites in the north west inner city including in 2015,

The Complex found a home in Little Green Street, Dublin 7 (Image to the left) . The former fruit factory aesthetic created an ideal setting for the main theatre/ exhibition space, nine artist’s studios and a contemporary space, which hosted the Ground Floor Gallery for emerging artists. Since September 2019 The Complex opened its doors on 21- 25 Arran Street East with 22 Artist studios and Gallery.
