As well as playing host to events as varied as dance, MMA matches, and theatre, The Complex is home to 15 studios currently fully occupied by 26 talented artists. As part of our new series focusing on the spaces and crew that make up The Complex, we are excited to turn the spotlight on our current studio artists, introducing them and the fantastic work they do.
First up is costume and fashion designer Amie Egan!
Amie Egan is a fashion designer and emerging costume designer for visual art currently
based in The Complex Studios, Dublin. She received her formal education at the National
College of Art and Design (NCAD) where she graduated in 2014 with a BDes(Hons) in
Fashion Design. Since graduating she has worked in the fashion industry in fashion
capitals such as Dublin, London, and New York. Her brand, AMIE EGAN, centres around
handmade outerwear garments inspired by changing landscapes and weather conditions
and has been showcased and sold at Brown Thomas, Fabiani Boutique, and Dunnes
Stores.
In 2021, alongside her fashion design practice, Amie began working within a visual art
context. She collaborates with a number of visual artists to create costumes and props that
enhance visual art, dance, theatre, short films, and music performances. Her approach is
experimental while informed by an appreciation for cultural and historical sources. She
draws inspiration from literature, mythology, the history of dress, and contemporary fashion
to create costumes that are not only visually engaging but also rich in narrative and
symbolic references. Amie has collaborated with artists such as Isadora Epstein (visual
artist), Eimear Walshe (visual artist), Sonia Shiel (visual artist), Jessie Keenan (dance
artist) and Frank Sweeney (filmmaker). Her work has been shown at the Venice Biennale,
the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), the Hugh Lane Gallery, NCAD Gallery, Visual
Carlow, the Mermaid Arts Centre, the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI), the Cork Film
Festival, and Club Hybrid in Austria.
