Saturday 7th September
‘Telltale Signs & Murmurations’ | The Complex | 12pm – 1.10pm
‘Telltale Signs & Murmurations’ is a programme of films from the North of our island. The series examines entangled and contested notions of public and private space, ownership and ways of perception specific to the North itself.
Featuring a carefully selected programme of 6 films the screening will be followed by a conversation between featured artists Aoife Desmond, Katie McFadden and Rabie Mustapha led by programme curator Ruairí McCann.
Films for a Free Palestine | The Complex | 2 – 3.30pm
This aemi-curated programme of Palestinian cinema will screen directly after ‘Telltale Signs & Murmurations’ on Saturday September 7th, establishing a timely dialogue between Northern Ireland and the current occupation of Palestine. This programme also reflects aemi’s ongoing solidarity with Palestine and its people.
Shared Resources by Jordan Lord | The Complex | 4 – 5.30pm
Filmed over five years, Lord's intimately shot feature film depicts their family after their father was fired from his job as a debt collector and their parents declared bankruptcy. In Lord's words: "the film self-reflexively utilizes open captions and visual descriptions both to provide access and to involve my family in reflecting how they see themselves in the film. Meanwhile, as my parents and I confront our very different understandings of debt and disability, the film asks what it means to owe each other everything."
Please note: This film contains flickering images. Viewers with photosensitivity or epilepsy should use caution.
‘the answer is a lemon’ – Films by Laida Lertxundi | The Complex | 6.30 - 8.30pm
Curated by Helena Gouveia Monteiro, viewers will explore the unique film landscapes crafted by Laida Lertxundi, swiftly guided by songs and textual fragments that both provide and defy meaning.
Through these 7 short films, travelling between Californian deserts and icy Norwegian waters, a syntax of affect and empathy emerges and delivers its rigorous beauty through collective gesture, observation, and movement. Intimacy and a personal feminist praxis radically challenge the preconceptions around first person female accounts within the male-dominated lineage of formalist experimental film.
‘This is my happening and it freaks me out!’ with afterparty | The Complex | 10pm
An evening of psychedelic experimental short films from pioneering filmmakers like Mary Ellen Bute, Adam K. Beckett (notable for his animation work on 'Star Wars') and Jordan Belson. Followed by an after-party in The Complex Bar.
