Join us at The Complex for an evening with the Turner prize-winning conceptual, video and installation artist, Jeremy Deller to celebrate the launch of his Art is Magic book. Art is Magic is artist Jeremy's attempt to tie up the key works of his career alongside the art, pop music, film, politics and history that have inspired his work. Much has been written about Deller over the decades but this is the first time he has pulled together all of his cultural touchstones.

On the night will have a Q&A with Siobhán Kane (Young Hearts Run Free) and Jeremy discussing his life in art through the prism of Art is Magic. We will preface the talk with a screening of Jeremy's documentary Everybody in The Place: An Incomplete History of Britain 1984–1992 which covered acid house and rave culture, and political turmoil in Britain in the 1980s and early-1990s. Resonant Frequency, a short film by Johnny Savage will open up the proceedings. Signed copies of Art is Magic are available in advance via the ticket link and also on the night.

Afterwards, we kick off the music with a live set from Frog Of Earth. FOE is a music project by Irish multidisciplinary artist/designer Mel Keane. The project draws from folk music, nature, and pseudophilosophy. FOE is presently exploring real and imagined musical histories of Ireland. Finally, in the main room Taking over the DeeJay controls to bring us home is Roo Honeychild, founder of the renowned party crew Club Comfort. A seamstress of cheeky edits and purveyor of high energy, grit-filled DJ sets, Honeychild has been an eminent force on Ireland's rave circuit for the last eight years. Room 2 will see an Atomic Radio takeover all night long with F!ONN, Pippa Molony, Pesci Tooth & Reflekta holding court.

Jeremy Deller @jeremydeller

Seminal works by Deller include Acid Brass (1997), The Battle of Orgreave (2001), Sacrilege ( 2012 Olympic Games), We're Here Because We're Here (2016, 100th Anniversary of the Battle of The Somme). The Battle of Orgreave was ranked second in The Guardian's Best Art of the 21st Century list, with critic Hettie Judah calling it a "monument of sorts, the performance was at once participatory ritual, spectacle, living archive and a space to mourn" In 20189, Deller produced the documentary Everybody in The Place: An Incomplete History of Britain 1984–1992 which covered acid house and rave culture, and political turmoil in Britain in the 1980s and early-1990s.

Art is Magic is divided into three sections: a visual guide through his favourite work, in-depth reflections on his life and art and, finally, a scrapbook of images to explain what drives him (from Rod Stewart to bats, the perfect jukebox to neolithic axe heads).

The book features work from across Deller's life and art - much of it never

seen before. These include his inflatable Stonehenge for the Glasgow International festival, the Miners' Strike (his Battle of Orgreave film), bats (a subject in at least three of Deller's works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), the links between the Industrial Revolution and Heavy Metal, and hen harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP (featured in his mural against grouse shooting created for the Venice Biennale).

Art is Magic gives us the most rigorous account of Deller and his work to date. Something for everybody.
