IAF: New Now Next: Maarten Gielen 25th May The Complex Depot

Now in its 10th season, Irish Architecture Foundation's series New Now Next returns to in-person talks in 2022, taking place in The Complex Depot. The themes of this year’s talks are the circular economy, spatial equity and sustainable urban development.

Maarten Gielen co-founded Brussels-based Rotor in 2006, where he currently works as a designer, researcher and manager. Rotor champions the re-use of construction materials and advocates for designing buildings with re-use in mind. Drawing on 10 years’ experience in deconstruction, logistics, architecture and building design with used materials, Maarten currently manages the spin-off Rotor DC (Deconstruction), which he co-founded in 2014, which dismantles, salvages and sells re-used building materials.

Maarten will address the urgent question: What systems, infrastructure, and actions are needed to make reuse as normal as using new material? How do we get from here to there?

This talk will be moderated by Janet Lynch. Janet is a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng) with Engineers Ireland, Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency Lead for Arup Ireland, and Chair for the NSAI committee for Circular Economy in Construction. She has 20 years of professional experience, with expertise in circular economy and net zero strategies for organisations and projects, environmental engineering, green procurement and asset management.
