​The gap between noise is a site - specific installation by visual artist Elaine Grainger. This is the artists first solo exhibition since graduating from her MFA at NCAD in 2018 and also The Ground Floor Gallery’s first solo show in its new space.

 

The space is reconfigured from a large fruit warehouse and, with a minimal amount of change. Through this it retains a balance, absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness with the innumerable scratches and marks on its surface but also through the sense of possibility inherent in allowing it to become a space for a new purpose; a site for art. It is this state of transition that theoretically links the artist practice to the site.

 

The nature of the artists practice is to take an intuitive sounding of a space, a fully sensory activity, and to use a method of arrangement and abstraction to create an installation that both references the site through scale and use of materials but also gives the viewer a gentle nudge to release their own curiosity about the space and to bring it outside the architectural boundaries and contemplate further. 

 

These assembled objects slowly evolve out of a working method that begins with the collection and selection of materials. A combination of ready-made materials and appropriated objects are transformed through a process of making and placing, arranging and rearranging. The artist creates an environment of tension between what may seem fixed with what is temporary. Assemblages are caught in the moment of being and not being, of becoming and collapsing. Questioning the value in the friction between attraction to change and the aversion to it, permits the work to appear partially assembled and also to remain unresolved.

 

The exhibition is accompanied by a commissioned text by Ingrid Lyons and is supported by Fingal County Council and Fire Station Artists Studios.

ABOUT THE ARTIST ​

Elaine Grainger is a visual artist she lives and works in Dublin. She recently graduated in 2018 with a Fine Art Masters Degree from NCAD. Her graduate exhibition work was selected for The RDS Visual Arts Awards 2018 curated by Amanda Coogan. She was the winner of The RDS Visual Arts, Centre Culturel Irlandais Residency Award 2019. She is also the recipient of the RHA Peer Residency Award 2019. Recent Exhibitions include RDS Visual Artist Award Exhibition 2018, Barely hardly there MFA Degree show 2018, Two person show Time is not a line Pallas Projects, Dublin 2017. Selected Group shows include RHA Annual 2019, Winter Open Rua Red, Dublin 2018, Detached Solstice Art Centre, Navan, 2017, peripheries Open, Gorey, 2017. In 2005, she established Talbot Gallery and Studios.
